Derived SI Units

Additional units may be derived from SI base units.  This is done by using the base unit in equations that define other physical quantities.  For example, volume has the unit (length)3.   The unit of volume is an example of an SI derived unit, which is a unit derived by combining SI base units.  the following table defines a number of derived units, several of which are used in chemistry.

Derived units

Quantity Definition of Quantity Symbol
Area Length squared m2
Volume Length cubed m3
Density Mass per unit volume kg m-3
Speed Distance traveled per unit time m s-1
Acceleration Speed changed per unit time m s-2
Force Mass times acceleration of object kg m s-2 (N)
Pressure Force per unit area kg m-1 s-2 (Pa)
Energy Force times distance traveled kg m2 s-2 (J)
